With guidance from renowned gifted education expert Joyce VanTassel-Baska, our faculty have worked hard this year to create a new schedule that better meets the needs of our students. We recognize our gifted students to be precocious, intense, and sensitive, and our curriculum is designed to provide advanced content, offer multiple perspectives through an interdisciplinary model, and have relevance, meaning, and purpose.
Throughout the summer, many teachers worked to design interdisciplinary curriculum models within both the homerooms and in collaboration with specialist teachers. Excited by research and experience that supports interdisciplinary work as better meeting the learning needs of gifted students, all teachers have requested additional time to work collaboratively across stages and specialties to plan new units of study. To that end, we are seeking parent support to relieve teachers from lunch supervision in order to create a regular meeting time for teachers during the lunch hour. Ideally, we’d like to have a commitment from parents who can be consistently available to provide lunch supervision once per week. One teacher will always be present in the lunch room who will act as a point person for parent volunteers.
Lisa Bottesi will be coordinating the volunteer efforts. Preference will be given to those who are available for a yearlong, once per week commitment. To volunteer, please e-mail email@example.com with your preferred day of the week. We are extremely grateful for your help in providing coverage, which will further enhance the best curriculum possible for the entire Lower School.
In order for us to comply with School policies and state law, lunch aid volunteers will need to complete a Roeper School volunteer registration, which includes a background screening and fingerprinting. Satisfactory background check results and paperwork must be received by The Roeper School before one is eligible to volunteer. This process typically takes about three weeks for clearance. Thank you for your assistance with this initiative to provide increased collaborative time for teachers. We look forward to working with our parent partners this year!
Finally, a quick note about Back to School Night (BTSN) — link to schedule: BTSN Schedule 2017
Again, we anticipate a full parking lot. We encourage you to arrive early to locate parking OR use the overflow parking lot. Signs will direct you to the overflow lot, just south of campus on Woodward, at the Stoneridge lot. A shuttle bus will provide transportation between the lot and the school throughout the evening. Please plan to arrive in the Multipurpose Room beginning at 6pm, to allow our program to begin on time at 6:30.
