Michelle and Venee’s class and Andi and Sarah’s class along with specialists Deb and Diane had an interesting and meaningful disussion on Community Day around the idea that speaking up in situations is a way to take care of each other. They read Say Something*, recommended by Carolyn Lett, and then asked the children how we could help take care of one another. Michele told them that Annemarie once said, “taking care of our school meant that we had to start taking care of one another”.
This is the chart with the children’s thoughts:
*The girl in this story sees it happening, but she would never do these mean things herself. Then one day something happens that shows her that being a silent bystander isn’t enough. Will she take some steps on her own to help another kid? Could it be as simple as sitting on the bus with the girl no one has befriended (and discovering that she has a great sense of humor)? – Amazon.com
