In an Upper school assembly this week, recent Golden Apple Awardee, Rudy Simons, presented The Detroit City Council “Spirit of Detroit Award” to The Roeper School. The award was given for Roeper’s participation in a “Read-In to mark the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s historic speech on April 4, 1967 – ‘Beyond Vietnam’ – when he offered his most radical critique of racism, militarism and extreme materialism in the U.S.”
The person largely responsible for Roeper’s participation was Roeper Junior, Janea Wilson, who accepted the award on the school’s behalf.
Rudy brought this national initiative to the attention of Linda Vernon who passed the idea along to Janea who then ran with it. Janea recruited readers from among students and faculty and directed the event which was a readers theater rendition of the speech. Congratulations to Janea and all who took part!
