by Laddie Andahazy, Head Coach
The Roughriders improved from last year’s record to a 10-9 (6-4 league record) in 2017-18. The young Roeper team started three juniors and two sophomores and continued to improve throughout the season despite significant injury and illness issues.
Boys’ highlights included sophomore guard Josiah Smith being voted MIAC red league MVP, averaging 16.1 points per game (ppg) and accumulating a season total of 17.1 ppg to gain him Detroit News All-Metro North honorable mention. Furthermore, sophomores Evan Akkashian (14.5 ppg) and Jacob Gladney (6.5 ppg and 3.5 apg) were voted 2nd Team All-MIAC. The team also found great support and leadership from its rapidly improving junior captain Griffin Glick, and juniors David Lee and Jon Gardner. In addition, Roeper Head Coach, Laddie Andahazy, was named MIAC Coach of the Year.
In summary, with several positives to build on and some hard work in the off-season, the Roughriders expect to be contending for league and district titles in the 2018-19 season.
