Thanks to the work of our Diversity Coordinator, Carolyn Lett, Roeper has received a 2016 USA Swimming Foundation Make a Splash Grant for $5,000! This is the seventh year that we have had a Make a Splash program during the summer and the second time we have received a grant. The goal of the initiative is to provide swimming lessons to children who would not otherwise have the opportunity. Here are some facts:
- Nine People drown each day in the U.S.
- In ethnically diverse communities, the youth drowning rate is more than the national average.
- Nearly six out of 10 African-American and Hispanic/Latino children are unable to swim – nearly twice as many as their Caucasian counterparts.
There were over 150 applications to support programs across the country and Roeper was one of 50 chosen. Learn more about Roeper’s Make a Splash program by watching this video!
