The Roeper Chess Team had a very successful showing at the 2015 Michigan Jr. High State Team Championship on Saturday. In our second year of competing at the State Jr. High level, Roeper teams took 2nd and 3rd place in the K-8 Championship division!
The Lower School team, comprised of Stage IV students: Nathan Ouyang, Aiden Song, Bryce Bottesi and Aristide Gardette took 2nd place. Our Middle School Team, comprised of: 7th graders, Blake Bottesi and Josiah Smith and 6th graders Kayden Pierre and Zion Johnson, took 3rd place. They played five rounds against opponents primarily in the 7th, 8th and 9th grade!
Individual medalists were:
Silver: Nathan Ouyang and Josiah Smith,
Bronze: Aiden Song and Kayden Pierre
In addition to these two teams, a third Middle School team comprised of Dylan Stafeil, Steven Raphael, Sam Weiss and Nolan Epps competed in the the K-12 Reserve division as part of the High School State Championship.
The Roeper Chess team has certainly become a force to be reckoned with.
The season will end in late April and May with teams traveling to the National Elementary tournament in Knoxville and the Jr. High National tournament in Louisville.
Thanks to our wonderful coaching staff of Diallo Smith, Patrick Radcliff, Ellen Hoppe and Bryan Wilson.
