Because African American and Hispanic/Latino children are two to three times more likely to drown than Caucasian children, The Roeper School, in conjunction with the USA Swimming Foundation, is dedicated to reducing this problem by offering a nationally recognized program known as, Make A Splash. Dozens of swimming instructors will be on hand at The Roeper School as over one hundred at risk children learn swimming, water safety and how to have fun whether in a pool or at the beach. This is the fifth year of this very successful program at Roeper. The Roeper program began in 2010 is one of only four Make A Splash programs in Michigan. Since 2010 Make A Splash At Roeper has taught nearly 500 students.
To reserve a space, email Carolyn Lett at Carolyn.email@example.com by August 1, 2014. All participants MUST attend the registration on Saturday, August 9, 2014. New family registration will be held from 9:30am until 11:00am. Returning family registration will be held from 12:30pm until 2:00pm.
The classes, which are one hour in duration, will take place Monday through Friday, August 18th through August 22nd. Lessons will commence on the hour beginning at 9am and will run until 3pm. The cost is only $10.00 per child thanks to The Roeper School and the generosity of Roeper Community members at fundraising events.
Carolyn Lett, Roeper Diversity Coordinator, stated, “The Roeper School has always embraced and promoted diversity and our participation in the Make A Splash program helps in a large way to fulfill our mission.”
Broadcast and Print Media are welcome to attend as there will be some great photo opportunities the week of the event. Advance interviews are also available to talk about the importance of teaching our children to swim.
